Constant Normal Stiffness Testing Included as Standard in EMDCSS From 2021 (Upgrades Available on Existing Systems)

Testing in Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) conditions have been widely used to better represent the effects of soil contraction/dilatation on the normal stress at the interface between the soil and the piles. A new (2021) upgrade to the control system and the firmware of GDS’ Electromechanical Dynamic Cyclic Simple Shear Device (EMDCSS) allows the apparatus to perform both static and dynamic simple shear tests in CNS conditions.

Klohn Crippen Berger used GDS' EMDCSS device as part of the laboratory testing program for Fundao Mine Tailings Dam Failure

As part of the advance laboratory testing program for Fundao Mine Tailings Dam Failure, KCB’s Vancouver Geotechnical Laboratory used GDS Instruments' EMDSS device to perform direct simple shear tests in order to obtain undrained peak and large strain shear strengths on monotonic simple direct shear tests; undrained response to cyclic loading on cyclic simple shear tests; and undrained response to cyclic loading on cyclic simple shear test with static bias.
