The GDS Autovalve is a servo-driven electromechanical valve designed for use with triaxial testing equipment and consolidation test machines. It automates stage transitions throughout the test sequence, including saturation, consolidation, and undrained shearing, removing the need for an operator to be present at each change.

In a conventional setup, manual valves mean a test can only progress as fast as someone is available to change a stage. That ties skilled lab staff to routine watching rather than higher-value work, and limits how many tests a lab can run in parallel. The Autovalve integrates directly with GDSLAB software and GDS Pressure Controllers, so once a test is started, it runs through to completion without anyone needing to be on hand for each transition.

The Autovalve is compatible with V3 GDS Standard Pressure Controllers. Advanced Pressure Controllers are not currently supported. This makes it a natural fit for labs running multi-day consolidation or back pressure stages where staffing overnight isn't practical.

Why servo-driven beats solenoid in geotechnical testing

Most automated valves use solenoid mechanisms, which generate heat, and in triaxial soil test equipment, even small temperature fluctuations can affect pore water pressure and volume-change readings. The GDS Autovalve is servo-driven instead, operating with virtually no heat output and keeping measurements accurate throughout the full test duration.


Minimised dead volume for more accurate pore pressure readings

Mounted directly on the triaxial cell, the Autovalve keeps the fluid path between valve and specimen as short as possible. The further a valve sits from the specimen in consolidation test equipment, the more fluid sits between them. That fluid compresses, resulting in lower pore water pressure readings and slower response during cyclic testing.

Direct cell mounting cuts that path to a minimum, delivering faster and more accurate pore pressure response, especially during undrained shear and dynamic loading.

Already Own a GDS Controller? You Don't Need to Replace It

The Autovalve is compatible with V3 GDS Standard Pressure Controllers. If you're running a V2 controller, an upgrade path is available, so you can add automation without buying new hardware. V1 controllers cannot be upgraded and are not compatible with the Autovalve.

How do I know if my Standard Pressure Controller is a V1, V2, or V3?

V1 controllers have an RS232 port. V2 controllers are marked "V2" on the base. V3 Controllers are marked with a V3 label on the barrel and “Standard Pressure Controller V3” on the base.

Is the Autovalve compatible with Advanced Pressure Controllers?

No. Advanced Pressure Controllers, including 2MPa/1000cc models, are not currently supported.

Do I need a special triaxial cell to use the Autovalve?

 No. The Autovalve works with a wide range of triaxial cells, including non-GDS cells, provided the valves can be connected in line. The cell shown in our product photos is for illustration only.

Is the Autovalve compatible with V2 controllers?

An upgrade path to V3 is available for V2 controllers. Contact GDS Instruments for details.

Can a V1 controller be upgraded to work with the Autovalve?

No. V1 controllers cannot be upgraded to V3 and are not compatible with the Autovalve.
